Third Annual Softball Classic
CSU vs. Somerville Road Runners
July 18, 1998 - 6:00 pm - Glakin Field, Cambridge

Scouting Report

Previous Meetings: CSU has a 2-0 edge in this annual summer classic.

Summary: This year's Somerville team looks stronger than the squad that dropped its two previous games, and the Yin-yangs have to be concerned by the absence of some key players and the departure of free agent Peter Brook to the opposing side. Even so, oddsmakers give Cambridge the edge based on its solid hitting, strength up the middle, and a few mid-season player acquisitions.

Team Report - SRR: (Pitching and Defense) Long-suffering manager Paul "I'm planning a Khoury's Eco-challenge" Colyer feels like he has whipped his defense into readiness, but it remains to be seen whether the SomeRun nine can avoid mental errors in the field that may have cost them the first two contests. Colyer has been known to pitch, but may hand over the ball to a younger arm this year. The defense will be held down by wizened veterans like Manny "Stretch" Arruda. The real question, though, is in the Somerville outfield, where the rumored addition of a few ringers may stem the tide of routine fly balls off the Cambridge bats turning into doubles and triples.

(Offense) if the game holds true to form, Somerville will put a lot of runs on the board. If the wind is blowing out, there might be a few balls hit into Fresh Pond.

(Intangibles) Terrific post-game parties.

Team Report - CSU: (Pitching & Defense) There's no need to rely on a lightweight hurler with player-manager Glenn "Are your gonna finish that?" O'Connor on the hill. that's just as well because there are questions about the infield, especially shortstop, with Brett Loosian inconveniently out of town on game day. One possibility would be to move Jon "you'd look scared, too, if you were playing third" from the hot corner, but there are questions about his range. Duke "What's your size?" Hutchinson holds down first base, but second is up for grabs with several powerful women vying for the starting job. The outfield, which appeared soft during Spring Training, figures to be alright with rookie Doug "Say Hey" Johnson patrolling the brown expanses of deep center at colorful Glakin Field with its strange and various debris.

(Offense) CSU should be strong, as always with power up and down the order. Look for a few long ones (and we don't mean Sunday training runs) from the orange and blue.

(Intangibles) Team philosophy is influenced by both the Dalai Lama and Homer Simpson.
